All-Flash Storage

Traditional hard disk drives (HDDs) use a mechanical arm to move around and read/write information from/to a spinning platter. These moving parts make HDDs susceptible to shock damage, age-induced wear and tear, and limit read/write throughput to the speed of the spinning platters. Solid state drives (SSDs) have no moving parts, making them considerably more durable than traditional HDDs. Since SSDs do not need to move mechanical arms to the correct position and spin up drive platters, data on SSDs can also be accessed almost instantaneously. This makes SSDs much faster than HDDs.

Why are there so many different types of SSDs?

 

SSDs wear out, but for different reasons than HDDs. Each time a NAND flash cell is erased, the cell degrades a little until eventually no new information can be written to the cell. SSD lifetimes are therefore dictated by the number of program/erase (P/E) cycles NAND flash can endure. Variations in flash endurance between SSDs stem from the adaptation of different NAND flash technologies (TLC, MLC, SLC) and the use of different wear-leveling techniques. Higher endurance allows more data to be written to the NAND flash cells before they “die”, but comes at a higher initial cost. However, in the long run, the longevity of higher endurance SSDs reduces significantly maintenance costs as illustrated by the price per terabytes written (TBW) in the Atipa All-Flash Storage line-up below.

What is NVMe?

Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVM Express or NVMe) is a communications interface/protocol designed to overcome the bottlenecks posed by SATA and SAS interfaces for SSDs (6Gb/s SATA maxes out at ~500MB/s, while 12Gb/s SAS tops out at ~1.5GB/s). By fully exploiting the parallelism of flash-based technology, NVMe offers unparalleled performance of up to 450,000 IOPS and Read/Write throughput up to 2.8/1.9 GB/s. NVM Express devices exist both as standard-sized PCI Express expansion cards and as 2.5-inch form-factor “disks” with a 4-lane PCI Express interface.
